– food rescue – free store!
We aim to create a community where no-one goes hungry. We do this by rescuing surplus food items from various suppliers and give them to those in need.
Just Zilch’s founder, Rebecca Culver, wanted to create a place where people could find hope.
90% of the food donated needs to be eaten that day, so we don’t ask questions. However, we do ask that everyone is considerate of others and take only what they need.
New Zealand’s longest running free store, we opened our doors in 2011 when an average of 80 people per day came through our doors. Fast-forward six years, and we now have have an average of 186 people a day!
To date, 204,187 individuals have used our services to access 1,342,205 food items that would otherwise have been dumped. All excess food items were distributed to community groups in Palmerston North, Manawatū, Horowhenua, Whanganui and Tararua for distribution.
None of this would be possible without the generosity of others. Every weekday afternoon some of our pool of 60+ volunteers help out, and we have 40 food and beverage businesses who give food freely.
In 2015, we moved into a new store – a very big thank you to Isles Construction, McNae Electrical, Brokenshire Plumbing, the Master Painters, along with everyone who helped or donated to the cause and helped build it – it truly is a community-built free store!
